Record-Breaking Tamil Star Presence at the 17th Annual Edison Awards in Penang
Penang, Malaysia – 17 May 2025:
The grand 17th Annual Edison Awards, a prestigious celebration honoring excellence in Tamil cinema, was held with resounding success at the Spice Arena, Penang on Saturday, May 17th, 2025. This year's edition marked a historic moment as the event welcomed an unprecedented number of Tamil film stars to Malaysian soil, making it the largest Tamil celebrity gathering ever hosted in the state.
Guest of Honour, YAB Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, graced the occasion and officially inaugurated the award ceremony. The event was also held in the esteemed presence of YB Dato' Seri Sundarajoo, Penang State EXCO for Housing, and YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy.
During his address, the Chief Minister expressed his admiration for the vibrant Tamil film industry and emphasized that this was the first time so many Tamil stars had participated in a single event in Penang. He noted the significance of such cultural exchanges in strengthening Tamil Nadu–Penang ties and pledged further support for initiatives that enrich arts and tourism in the state. He also shared his aspiration to collaborate with the Tamil film industry even after his term in office.
The Edison Awards saw the glittering presence of several top stars including Simran, Khushbu, Madonna Sebastian, Sanam Shetty, and playback singer Shakthisree Gopalan. Popular directors such as Venkat Prabhu, Arunraja Kamaraj, actors Anandaraj, Sathish, Jagan, Y.G. Mahendran, Vijay Kanishka, Ananth Ram, and Shanthanu Bhagyaraj were among the many who lit up the evening.
Dance choreographers Baba Bhaskar and Sandy Master, comedians Pugazh, Redin Kingsley, Robo Shankar, and music directors Sam CS, Leon James, and Anthony Dasan also received awards and gave energetic performances.
One of the most talked-about highlights of the night was the surprise dance performance by Simran and Baba Bhaskar, which thrilled fans and added an electric spark to the show. Baba Bhaskar and Pugazh, although award recipients, joined the audience in celebrating each win with enthusiastic whistles and cheers, showcasing the joyful spirit of the night.
From start to finish, the event was filled with fun and laughter, beautifully hosted by Dheena and Diya, who kept the energy high throughout. The evening began with a warm welcome speech by Edison Awards CEO Selvakumar, followed by a heartfelt vote of thanks from Kumaresan.
Adding to the uniqueness of the evening was the concept of “Dine with Stars”, which allowed fans to enjoy dinner while watching the show alongside their favorite celebrities — a one-of-a-kind experience that left a lasting impression on attendees.
